Resolution In Opposition to House Bill 777

Whereas the Supreme Court of the United States has determined that “Separate but Equal” is inherently unequal, and

Whereas it is the duty of every citizen of the United States to oppose injustice and inequality in all of its forms, and

Whereas it is an established principle of the Democratic Party that Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered (LGBT) persons are full and equal members of our party and citizens of the United States, and

Whereas North Carolina Representatives Annie W. Mobley, Michael H. Wray, William D. Brisson, Timothy L. Spear, Dewey L. Hill and James W. Crawford, Jr. are the only Democratic members of the North Carolina House who have sponsored North Carolina House Bill 777, a discriminatory bill which seeks to write discrimination against LGBT people into our State’s constitution, and

Whereas North Carolina Representatives Annie W. Mobley, Michael H. Wray, William D. Brisson, Timothy L. Spear, Dewey L. Hill and James W. Crawford, Jr. have associated themselves with a mean spirited piece of legislation at a time when they should be concerned about North Carolina’s economy rather than pursuing a bigoted social agenda.

Be it therefore resolved:

That the Ninth Congressional District of the North Carolina Democratic Party directs all Democratic members of the General Assembly to oppose and vote against House Bill 777, or any similar bill which seeks to diminish the equal rights of our fellow citizens.

And the Ninth Congressional District further directs any Democratic members of the General Assembly who have sponsored or cosponsored this legislation, or any similar legislation to withdraw their support immediately.

And the Ninth Congressional District hereby admonishes North Carolina Representatives Annie W. Mobley, Michael H. Wray, William D. Brisson, Timothy L. Spear, Dewey L. Hill and James W. Crawford, Jr. for their discriminatory conduct which violates the basic principles upon which the Democratic Party stands.
